Energy Efficiency Tips
Follow these simple steps to increase energy efficiency and enjoy significant savings.
- Consider installing a programmable thermostat that automatically adjusts the temperature at certain times of the day.
- Dimmers and timers can be added to light fixtures to reduce energy costs.
- During winter, open draperies to let in the sun's warmth during the day; close draperies to slow the loss of heat through the glass at night.
- Upgrading the insulation in your exterior walls, crawl spaces, basement and attic can be an inexpensive way to conserve energy year round.
- Use caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows to seal cracks and leaks. Also, check for tiny holes around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes.
- Consider clear window insulator kits in the winter to eliminate drafts. This will make it easier for your heater to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.
- Maintain the duct work in your home. Make sure your ducts are properly sealed and consider getting them cleaned out on a regular basis.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs with the ENERGY STAR® label. These are available for indoor and outdoor lighting.
- Plug home electronics into power strips, and turn the power strips off when those electronics are not in use.
- Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
- Unplug battery chargers when not in use.
- Wait until you have full loads of laundry or dishes to wash them.
- Strategically placed trees and shrubs can be a beautiful way to bring shade and reduce energy costs.
- Make sure your refrigerator door seals are airtight. Put a lit flashlight in your refrigerator and close the door. If you see any light peeking through, you may need to replace the seal.
- Make sure your refrigerator isn't cooler than it needs to be. The temperature in your refrigerator should be between 38 and 40 degrees, while the freezer should be between 0 and 5 degrees.
- Keep your freezer as full as possible. The more full it is, the less cold air will escape when you open the door.
- Try to reduce your time spent in the shower. Consider a high-efficiency shower head.
- Use the cold or warm water settings on your washing machine. Hot water is generally only needed for oily stains.
- Keep the lint filter in your dryer cleaned out to improve air circulation.
- Consider air-drying clothes on a clothes line or drying racks whenever possible.
- Consider installing an exhaust fan in your kitchen. This will remove hot air and reduce cooling costs.
